The Leeds Philharmonic Society is one of the UK’s major promoters of choral music. Affectionately known as the Phil, it comprises around 125 men and women singers. It is one of the oldest choral groups in the country and has sung to the citizens of Leeds since 1872. As well as taking part in the annual Leeds International Concert Season, the Phil appears at major venues across the country and visits mainland Europe every other year.
We began the 2011-12 season in November with a well-reviewed (see Yorkshire Post) performance of five motets by Anton Bruckner followed by Gustav Mahler’s epic second (“Resurrection”) symphony. Our next appearance was at the Lord Mayor’s Carol Concerts on 15 December where we gave two consecutive performances to enthusiastic capacity audiences.
We are now enjoying preparing for our next three concerts, culminating in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebratory Concert on 2 June. See the summary opposite, or more details in this season’s brochure.
